19.02.10

It's week two in the series we are calling 'Turns You Can Trust'. So who better to hit you with dear reader than the mighty Sonic Youth? Formed in New York Rock City back in 1981, they have been making the right moves ever since.

Bought to the attention of us Brits by Paul Smith who decided he had to form a record label (Blast First) to put out their records over here, after getting snubbed by indie wimps Rough Trade. So why should you trust them? Well, if you were to play Bad Moon Rising from 1986, and then their album from just last year The Eternal, what you will hear is a band that is still relevant, still Interesting and still able to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Trying to describe their sound really is as pointless as dancing to architecture, even intelligent writers end up saying stuff like “a melancholic, meowing slide line playing off a delicate stack of crystalline arpeggios”.

So when Sonic Youth next roll into your town, do the right thing and trust your instincts.

HADOUKEN! RETURN TO KOKO

When Hadouken! played a Club NME show here in June 2007, there was crowd surfing antics from the main bar right to the front of the stage. Lets hope they still got it now they’re grown up and wear more black than flouro..

GUILTY PLEASURES

There is a photo on Guilty Pleasures’ web site that is a snapshot of the dance floor at what has to be the peak of the proceedings. The sheer joy on people’s faces is something to cherish. In fact if the grey weather is getting to you, you may want to drag the photo on to your desk top. The fun factor increases seven fold this month as Guilty Pleasures hitch their collective wagons to a Cowboy and Indians theme, so don your war paint and headdress then follow the smoke signals to Camden. Cowboys, round up the cattle and get those wagons rolling then head for the sunset over Mornington Crescent. This is going to be one hell of a hoedown.

FUCK BUTTONS

If there are two of you in the band, and you are influenced by both The Aphex Twin and Mogwai, then you must be Fuck Buttons, from our very own Bristol. You also made one of the best albums of 2009 called Tarot Sport, and we can hardly wait to see you play here on 20th April.

Anyone spot this weeks animal theme yet? Pulled Apart By Horses made a sound like the end of the world and the kids loved them.

Spotted at Club NME last week. If we spotted you, email us proof and we will put you on the list for the next one.
