Imagine being able to travel back in time and sit next to Malcolm McLaren on a long-haul flight. What would you have asked him? Would you be brave enough to bring up the subject of when Johnny Rotten described him as the most evil man on the planet? or would you just chat about music from The New York Dolls to Double Dutch? McLaren was always ahead of the pack, he opened Let It Rock on the Kings Rd with the then other half Vivienne Westwood, way back in 1971, when it was all huge lapels and wrong-un trousers, they sold Teddy Boy gear. After a brief stint managing The New York Dolls (who play here on Monday), he returned to London and renamed the shop SEX. You have no idea how controversial this was unless you were there. The rest is some of the most important musical history this country has got. May 1977 The Sex Pistols released God Save The Queen slap bang in the middle of the Queens Silver Jubilee. Oct 1977 The Sex Pistols released the single most important album of the last 30 years and a year later the band split. Since then he gave us, Bow Wow Wow, Duck Rock, Double Dutch and Madam Butterfly. Johnny Rotten was asked for a comment on his passing and said he was too upset to talk about it. Speaks volumes through silence.

R.I.P. Malcolm Robert Andrew McLaren (22 January 1946 – 8 April 2010)

THE NEW YORK DOLLS

Possibly the most important band since Kraftwerk left the building are coming to our humble abode. How excited are we? very very excited. Because just like Johnny sang, you can't put your arms around a memory, but you certainly can throw them in the air when The New York Dolls take to the stage and unleash a lesson in Rock’n’ Roll.

Band of Horses Band of Horses

B.O.H. look like they chop wood in their spare time, how they make some of the most sublime harmonious music known to mankind? It's a mystery we don't need to unravel, because we're too busy marvelling at their majesty to care.
