Shocking start to the year with the death of Ron Asheton founder of the modern day rock riff. For Ron, along with Iggy Pop, was a founder member of The Stooges, and as the guitarist, his influence on future generations of long haired yoot is as immeasurable as it it is vast. From a selfish point of view it makes The Stooges show at Hammersmith Odeon in 2005 even more special, when on a cold September night they tore through the whole of Fun House as if it really was 1972 and had just been released. Yes folks 1972, hell their first gig as The Stooges was in 1967. So you can finish the arguments about who was punk rock earlier than anyone else, right here, with the memory of Ron Asheton playing the opening chords to 1969 or I wanna Be Your Dog, infact take your pick of any song from the first three albums. Just sad to see Iggy selling car insurance, but let's save that for another day, and right now, take a moment to raise a glass to Ron Asheton, truly one of a kind.
