Who hasn't listened to the Radio 4 institution that is Desert Island discs and fantasized about appearing on it? Who hasn't listened to it and winced slightly as once again a Stephen Fry type achieves even more massive relentless overexposure?
Who hasn't clenched their buttocks in angst as you realise that your list will be way more interesting than some opera singer you have never heard who always slips in a mind numbingly boring Beatles tune or worse adds some clattering dirge from his son's indie by numbers band? Some of us spend a large percentage of their waking hours and possibly some time when asleep putting in order and then re-ordering the list of records that we would take to the sandy stretch of tropical solitude. What if the powers that be decided you could only choose one band?
Should make compiling the list of eight tunes a little easier. Well worry no more, there is only one band that even comes close to fitting the bill, and that band is The Fall. John Peel famously said what he likes about them is that they are always the same and always different, and guess what he was right. The Fall play KOKO on Tues 17th Nov 2009. Buy a ticket. You now know it makes sense.
Ted offering Roy Plumley the full salute.
CLUB NME U18
In association with NME we have got it together to offer something for our under 18 friends, and what’s more it's set to happen once a month with a revolving lineup of completely brilliant bands playing live.
The first one kicks of with Dan Black and MPHO on the afternoon of Sat 19th Sep, and no old folk around to make things look untidy.
Delphic are for anyone with a decent set of ears that are possibly too young to have ever heard of New Order, possibly. Ghostcat, are for everyone feeling slightly let down by the all the new female fronted pop acts that were in all the music papers one's to watch list at the end of last year. Seriously.
This week's cake of the week from The Little Baker on Camden High St is the local classic, Frog.
ALICE RUSSELL
The frankly amazing Alice Russell first came to prominence as a featured vocalist with Quantic and Quantic Soul Orchestra. Fans of Mr Scruff, Massive Attack, Roy Ayers and De La Soul may also be aware of her dulcet tones that appeared on a host of their tunes.
But you need to check her out with her own nine piece band to get the full lowdown on what this soulful Suffolk sensation is all about.
Maybe if she had a terrible drug problem, and a host of inappropriate boyfriends she would of already sold KOKO out four times and be all over the papers. But you know what? When you've got a voice as good as she has, it won't be long before the rest of the world catches up anyhow. Buy a ticket and then you can at least say, "I saw her do a club show once and it was deep, like Atlantis"..
