We recently bribed Camden ace face Pirate Jenny with some guest list action at Tunng and Tinarewin, and in return she promised to put together a top five of Camden Town ace faces from the past. This is what she sent in,
1. Mr. Mary Byker - previous winner of the NME ligger of the year award, and absolute ‘chap extraordinaire’ Mary once had the nickname, Mayor of Camden and that takes dedication. He eventually ran off into a Rio sunset with a beautiful waitress from Bar Ganza, and who can blame him? None more Camden.
2. Syd Strong - From the old barbershop that used to be 271 Camden High St. A total legend, who gave Madness their flat tops, you used to sit in line silently praying you would get Syd and not the slightly special other one.
3. Martin the Fruit Man - Martin was a permanent fixture on Inverness St fruit and veg market for years, a regular at the Good Mixer for even longer. Martin always knew what was going down and was more than happy to explain to local greenhorns exactly who owned what and who'd fallen out with whom. He also used to be a cab driver and once chucked Sid and Nancy out of his motor for swearing at him.
4. George and Niki's - Lovely caff in Parkway, now long gone- the couple in there - were they actually George and Niki?, was there someone there called Vange?
5. Jane Owen – for the book, Camden Girls and forming the Right to Party, Party.
Ted, Camden through and through…. |

JULLIETE LEWIS
Should actors make music? perhaps only if their name is Julliet Lewis? Come and see what some people folk have described
as the female Iggy Pop, (just hope she doesn't feel the need to make an car insurance advert anytime soon).

THE BAYS + RED SNAPPER
We love The Bays, aside from their unique and pioneerind approach to music, (no records, no reheasals, no set list just full on
improvisation) there are no other live bands that can channel various flavours of dance music with such panache.
The support bill, is non too shabby either.

OK Mark E Smith spent most of the show hunkered down in a wheel chair hiding out behind the amps, hell he even spent the last three
songs singing them from the green room back stage. Still the opposite of everything, and still filling huge gaps left in so called modern music.

FRENCH NEW WAVE - BFI SOUTHBANK - 9 APR to 4 JUNE
BFI celebrates 50 years of the French New Wave, a film movement that transformed European cinema when it exploded out of France in 1959. These filmmakers rebelled against convention and inspired a generation with their breathtaking films that ooze with cool and charisma. Highlights include Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot Le Fou and Breathless, as well as the film that started it all, François Truffaut's debut feature The 400 Blows - which will also be re-released by the BFI in cinemas nationwide on 10 April.
Don't miss this season of landmark films - go here for more information.
