Back in the day when Gary Glitter was a national treasure and not a national disgrace, most teenage music lovers all did the same thing on a Sunday night. Tape the top forty onto a really simple machine with a little hand held mic. Hitting pause when the likes of Status Quo or Wings came on, it was just possible to create a listenable C90 of your favourite singles. There was no fear of your bedroom door being kicked in by government agents and being dragged off to court to be charged with piracy. Elton still became a millionaire and the last time we looked the earth was still on it's axis.
So why now? Trying to make anyone who downloads music for free into a criminal is a bit like introducing prohibition at a Pogues gig. It's not going to work. Music fans have a huge appetite and maybe they just got fed up with being continually ripped off to the tune of fifteen sheets for something that cost fifteen pence to make. It's a crazy modern world we live in and the best thing about it, is no official body can do a damn thing to stop it getting more modern by the day. The only truly correct thing to do is of course is support your favourite artist and band, by buying a ticket to see them play live, because as life changing experiences go fifteen quid is a bargain.
