Seven Collar T-Shirt and Estrella UK Bound!!
Date: 19 March 2009
Kugiran Negara ke UK Enterprise (KNUKE) and Malaysian indie label Laguna Records have joined forces to bring two of Malaysia’s top indie bands on a whistle stop UK tour.
KNUKE, the same people responsible for bringing Malaysian indie heroes Hujan to the UK last year, has upped the ante this year by collaborating with Laguna Records to bring two of Malaysia’s hottest bands – sultry indie jazz types Estrella and indie rock merchants Seven Collar T-Shirt (7CTS) – to entertain the cities of London, Manchester and Brighton.
The tour, which is scheduled to take place from March 27 to April 6, is predominately aimed at the sizable Malaysian student population in the UK (approximately 10,000 students currently in the UK this year according to reports) and will take place during the Easter break. The overall target audience for the three shows is expected to be around 700 per show, mainly comprising of Malaysian students as well as local audiences.
For the tour, the bands will be performing at the Venue in the University of London Union (ULU) on March 29th; the Druids Arms in Brighton on April 1 and the newly opened MOHO live in Manchester on April 4. Supporting acts on the tour will comprise of Malaysian bands and artistes residing in the UK as well as local bands like Sweet Sweet Lies (Brighton) and The Paris Riots (Manchester).
Commented 7CTS frontman Duan about the prospect of his band heading to UK to play some live shows for the very first time during a recent press conference: “I’m both nervous and excited about the tour. In fact, I still can’t believe it’s really happening. Expectations? Well, we just hope that people will like our music. We want to put on a good performance for everyone at the shows and show people that Malaysian indie bands can also rock on the international stage with the best of them.”
Added Liyana Fizi, Estrella’s vocalist: “This is an amazing oppourtunity for us to not only get our music heard by a wider audience but also open the door for other Malaysian bands to do the same thing. I think just the experience alone of going on a tour like this is going to help both bands immensely so I can’t wait!”
During their two-week stint in the UK, the Malaysian touring party will also be taking time out of their busy schedule to head down to KOKO in Camden to sample some top drawer live rock n’ roll shenanigans. Of course, KOKO Asia will be keeping everyone posted the juicy details of their night out at our lovely club and venue as well as the goings on the tour itself so do look out for more postings right here in very the near future.
